Mass Readings on our Parish Website
The drop down bar under Downloads brings up extra pages. On the page Readings for Masses is a complete set of the full Lectionaries used in our parish, i.e. for weekdays as well as Sundays. Also, a liturgical calendar and a link to the on-line Ordo for Australia and New Zealand which gives the current and the next week's ordo.
The page Readings Nov 17 to Dec 22 provides upcoming Sunday Mass Readings on individual files copied from the Lectionary, Readings for further Sundays are added as time goes by, and the page name is updated accordingly.
These resources are to help reflect on the scripture in the week prior to coming to Mass or to check back after Mass is over.

NEW Parish Database & App
The Parish is now running a new database system called ‘Infoodle’. With this new system there is also an app which parishioners can download on their phones/devices from the ‘App Store’ for Apple or ‘Google Play Store’ for Android. After searching ‘Infoodle’ from your App or Google Play Store and downloading it, enter ‘St Joseph’s Parish Upper Hutt’ in the organisation name search box. Once this loads you will be able to see ‘Coming Events’ in the Parish. You can click on ‘Events’ on the bottom panel and it will display the Parish diary with all booked baptisms, funerals, meetings, community events etc within the Parish. Also on the bottom panel you will find ‘Bulletin’ which will be updated with the current weekly bulletin.
To keep the Parish database current, a form has been created called ‘Parishioner Household Details’ which is also on the bottom panel of the App. This form will also be available on the Parish website for parishioners that aren’t able to access the App. If each household within the parish can fill out this form with household details and each individual family members details (by clicking ‘add another’ at the bottom) it would be very helpful. Once you have submitted this form it will get sent straight to the parish office and the details will be uploaded directly to the new parish database. The old database has been transferred over so your household may already be in the new database. However if you have updated your contact details, or have children who have now grown up and are now not living in your household, this updated information would be great to have. If you or your family have an email address that the parish office does not have, supplying it would allow the parish secretary to send out emails with important parish notices, rosters, the bulletin etc which will in turn also save on printing costs. If you have any questions or need help with any of this please call or visit Barbara in the office.

St Joseph's Parish Review
“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. The parish review group which consists of Father Maleko, PPC, Finance committee, Liturgy committee representative and St Joseph's school principal, has prepared its report and recommendations to be sent to Cardinal John Dew by the 31st of October as requested by him. This report is available to the parish in the foyer this weekend.
St Joseph's Parish Review
In light of feedback to the Parish Pastoral Council, there has not been enough opportunity to comment on or offer other suggestions regarding the proposed Parish Review recommendations. We are now offering further opportunity to do so. Please feel free to do this in the form of a letter to the review group through the PPC chair person Peter Dawson, talk to Father Maleko, one of the PPC members, a finance committee member, the Liturgy co-ordinator, or St Joseph's school’s principal. There is urgency though so this should be done by no later than Tuesday the 3rd of September at 4 pm.

The Role of Mothers in our lives:
Today we thank our Mothers, pray for them and honour them by celebrating Mother’s Day and by offering our Mothers on the Altar of God.
This is a day to admit gratefully the fact that none of us is able to return in the same measure all the love that our Mothers have given us. Their influence on their children is so great that it affects the children throughout their lives. Our mothers not only gave us birth but nursed us, nurtured us, trained us in their religious beliefs and practices, taught us good manners and ideal behaviour, disciplined us as best as they could and made us good citizens of our Country, our Church and our society. There is a beautiful Spanish proverb: “An ounce of mother is better than a pound of Clergy.” Therefore, it is highly proper for us to express our love and gratitude to our mothers by our presence, gifts and prayers on Mother’s Day. We offer this Eucharistic Celebration on Mother’s Day for all the mothers in our congregation, whether they are alive or have gone for their eternal reward. Jesus in his farewell speech: “Love one another as I have loved you.” Therefore, let us lavish our love on our mothers and express our gratitude for them in the form of fervent prayers offered for them before God.

Give a helping hand ...
As you know the vestments that we use in the Church for Mass, and the lavabo towels that we use are very old and we would like to replace them all. Fr. Biju is going to India for his holidays and he can get them from India rather cheaply. We need vestments for all our liturgical seasons. Each vestment may cost between $40 and $50. Please contribute generously what you can towards this. If there is sufficient money we will also buy a humeral veil each for the Eucharistic ministers as well. Kindly give it to Fr. Biju or please submit it in the office, before 21st of this month. Your generosity and good will is very much appreciated.

Church Parking
Apart from one disability park on the side of the Church Doors we ask people not to park their cars in front of the Church. Apart from being dangerous, it stops people using this area after Mass to socialise and spend time together. It also stops access for ambulances in emergencies and for total mobility taxis.
ALSO would parishioners please refrain from parking their vehicles on the grass in the Church grounds. Thank you.

June is the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
We put a cloak on the statue in our church to remind us of the burning love that Jesus has for us and that we would like to express back to Jesus. The devotion is of course not actually to the statue. The image is a representation, that shows in a humanly understandable way the life and love that Jesus offers us. Devotion to the Sacred Heart is to his real presence in the world and most particularly in Holy Communion. The Eucharist is the Sacred Heart of Jesus living and dwelling amongst us and calling each of us to come to Him. The message of the Sacred Heart is that the Holy Eucharist is not a thing, but a person, the person of our loving Saviour, whose divine heart is on fire with a deep, personal love for each of us in the Blessed Sacrament. Several Saints received revelations of Jesus' Sacred Heart, most notably St Margaret Mary by whom we are given the twelves promises of the Sacred Heart.
Hygiene at Mass
From time to time concerns are raised by parishioners regarding the spread of illness through the reception of the Body and Blood of Christ at Communion and by sharing the Sign of Peace with a handshake.
There are several measures we can take during the season of flu viruses, colds and cold sores to safeguard the health of one another. However, when suffering from infections that can quickly pass from one to another, it is advisable to stay at home.
Some advise to parishioners would be to wash your hands prior to Mass.
Use a handkerchief or tissue for sneezing and blowing your nose.
If you have any level of unwellness: cough into the crook of your arm or sleeve to minimize the spread of germs to others. If you usually receive on the tongue please receive on the hand if you have a cold. Refrain from receiving from the chalice.

End of Life Choice Bill
On the weekend of 15-16 July there will be a National Postcard Campaign in the six Dioceses of New
Zealand. This is in response to the fact that the End of Life Choice Bill, promoted by David Seymour, has been pulled from the Private Members Ballot and is likely to get its first reading in Parliament on either 24 July or 9 August.
Our Catholic Bioethics centre, the Nathaniel Centre has helped to design a postcard that will enable
people to express their concerns about David Seymour’s bill and hopefully send a strong message to Members of Parliament to vote “NO”
It would be very much appreciated if you would support this postcard campaign over the weekend
15-16 July.
Post cards will be available in foyer of Church if you wish to send one to our MP (it costs nothing to send). We believe that it is important that this gets as much attention as possible now as this Bill will be debated at a time when the Select Committee on End of Life issues has not yet reported back to Parliament on its findings.
Please give your full support to this Postcard Campaign.

Do you know a boy who loves to sing? Following the growing
success of the Boys’ Choir at the Metropolitan Cathedral we are expanding our intake of choristers to include boys from around the Wellington region. We are on the lookout for fun loving, happy and friendly boys who would like to audition for the Archdiocesan Boys’ Choir. Previous experience of singing in choirs or prior musical training is not required. If your son can sing in tune and enjoys music then encourage him to audition! Over their time in the choir, boys will learn sound vocal technique, music theory, life-skills, teamwork, as well as grow in confidence and discipline. Teachers and parents see the boys’ language skills, reading comprehension skills, maths skills and confidence improve greatly by being a part of the choir. The life of chorister provides the ability to develop spiritual, as well as musical, intellectual and personal gifts.
We are holding another afternoon of auditions on Thursday 6 July 4:00pm-5:30pm at the Cathedral on Hill Street, Thorndon, Wellington.
For more information and to register your interest please contact Michael Fletcher, Director of Music, Metropolitan Cathedral or email m.m.fletcheremalail m.fletcher@wn.catholic.org.nz or phone 04 496 1700.

PARKING ON SUNDAY
Parking in Advocate Service Lane (off Royal Street) It has been brought to our attention by the shop owners, that parishioners who come to the 9am & 10.30am Masses on Sundays are parking their vehicles in such a way that the shop owners are not able to get to their shops. Please have some consideration and leave enough room for them to get access to the back of their premises.
Many thanks.

Passionist family Movement
Passionist Priest Father Brian Traynor will be in the parish this Weekend to promote and talk to us about Family groups. These groups have been operating in the parish for over Twenty-five years and they give people the opportunity to meet together socially and support one another as an extended family. There will be a special morning tea after 9am Mass and a sausage sizzle lunch after 10:30 Mass to give people an opportunity to talk to Father Traynor and family group members and to sign up to join a group if they wish. Family groups are a good way for new families to get to know others in the Parish. Contact Teresa or Stewart Homan 5279061
After being a part of the Passionist Family Group Movement at St Joseph’s, it was a natural avenue for our family to seek out Passionist Family Movement in the Parish of Napier after moving to Taradale 6 years ago. Passionist groups have always been a part of our family life. It has been a great way to meet new people, families and for our whole family to socialise with others who share same beliefs,
values and to have fun times spent together. Joining PFG at our new Parish has helped us connect with other opportunities and Parish life.

Synod weekend 15-17th of September
Synod weekend 15-17th of September, Cardinal John has called a Synod of the Wellington Diocese for September this year. As in the past we will send (9) parish representatives to the Synod. These
people will not be representing the Parish but will be Synod Representatives the difference being that they will help the Cardinal to know the mind and heart of the Diocese and what needs priority in the future. The Cardinal wants this Synod to be a true movement of the Spirit so in that Spirit, Father Maleko and the PPC invite the whole Parish to prayerfully discern the people we will send from St Joseph’s. We ask you to spend this week praying to be inspired by the Spirit to select people for nomination and will call for these on the weekend of the 9th of April. This is the first step in the process, which will be followed by a vote and discernment by Father Maleko and the PPC.
When you decide on a nomination we will ask that you check that the person is available for a day meeting on 27th of May, participation in some parish meetings, the Synod Weekend and some follow up meetings in the Parish. The criteria for the synod reps is that they be prayerful and discerning, willing to let the Holy Spirit work through them willing to dialogue and listen to others, have some parish knowledge. There will also be Parish meetings for the whole parish, more about this later. Please earnestly pray for our representatives to the synod this week if you want to know more please talk to a PPC member.

St Josephs JPD Group Trust
St Josephs JPD Group founded a Trust in 2016 to address homelessness in our area. The Upper Hutt Housing Trust has now completed all the registration processes and is ready to raise funds for our first home. Orongomai Marae gave us our trading name Homai te Whairoa which literally means giving life. In our context it is empowering people to recover from a desperate situation and regain some dignity in their life. Orongomai also gave us a Taonga which is a small mounted feathered cloak to symbolise the help that we surround the people with who receive our support. The JPD group will be presenting this to the Parish at the 9am Mass.
There are some leaflets in the parish foyer explaining the trust and asking if you are able to support them. Please talk to Teresa Homan, Bill Kirkup or Judy Dixon if you would like to know more.

On behalf of the Parish Community we would like to say thank you so very much to Marie & Bill Kirkup for the many years of running the Sacramental programme here in the Parish. You both have done a wonderful job and we wish you both all the very best in your retirement.
Lent Appeal 2017 – Climate Change in the Pacific
The effects of a changing climate are being felt across the Pacific, where increasingly severe storms, rising sea levels and other environmental challenges are being faced by peoples in the region.
In response to these challenges, we are working with vulnerable communities in Papua New Guinea,
Kiribati an Solomon Islands, among others, to help them adapt to the changes and mitigate the effects. Our programmes include ensuring people have reliable access to clean water and nutritious foods, are able to provide for themselves and their families through sustainable livelihoods, and are better prepared for future emergencies.

The Missing Christmas Lantern
Over the last 2 years, this big Xmas lantern (about 6 ft.) has adorned the church during the Xmas season. The inner structure was made from bamboo while the outside was wrapped in magenta and blue garlands. The lantern is a traditional Filipino decoration whom my father and I made specifically for St JosephsUpper Hutt. However, when my husband asked people in the parish as to where this lantern was kept or gone to, no one is able to tell us so now, the church has no Xmas decoration except the Xmas wreath/candle in the altar.
It is assumed someone may have mistakenly taken it home thinking the church no longer needs it after the 2015 Xmas season or could be during one of the clean-up activities of the parish?
It may too late to put it up in the church this year but would love to have it back for next Year’s Christmas. Thank you. (Robbie & Carmelita Balatazar)
If you know the whereabouts of this Lantern could you please contact the Parish Office 528 2028.

It may too late to put it up in the church this year but would love to have it back for next Year’s Christmas. Thank you. (Robbie & Carmelita Balatazar)

St. Joseph’s Venturer Scouts are making and selling lamingtons to fundraise to attend the 21st New Zealand Jamboree in Blenheim after Christmas this year and the 51st Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School in Matamata, in January 2017.
At $15 per dozen (the same price for the past 7 years!), they are sure to sell as quickly as last year! Those of you who have supported us in the past by buying these delicious large lamingtons, know that we deliver them to you fresh to eat and that they freeze well – ideal for those “bring a plate” Christmas functions! Little City Big Bash.
Thanks to all of you who donated food, cakes and helped with the Devonshire Teas. Thanks to the music people who gave of their time. It was a great occasion. $450 was raised and this will be given to the Catholic Women’s League and St Vincent de Paul Society. We also gave away over 400 sausages. The focus on Catholic City Builders got us all walking down memory lane and we could think of many more Catholics that have played a significant role in the building of Upper Hutt. It is a great opportunity for us to reflect on how we can be a powerful influence for good in our Church, work places and recreation
activities. Once again thanks – we could not have done it without you.

Mission Sunday
Next weekend 23 OCTOBER 2016 our Parish will be celebrating World Mission Sunday.
It is a day when we celebrate who we are as Christians; missionary-disciples. It is a day of prayer. It is also a day when we are invited to look beyond our local Church in New Zealand and assist through financial gift the missionary work needed in the young Dioceses in many developing countries. An example of this work is the pastoral reach out of Sr. Eulie and the Daughters of Charity in Cambodia. They help provide the country’s most vulnerable children with emotional and spiritual support, as well as an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and gain a future through education. COME AND LEND YOUR SUPPORT TO THIS APPEAL, “THAT ALL MAY HAVE LIFE”

Stewardship Month
“Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” (Luke 17:18)
Most of us live very easy lives. We have food, shelter, clothing, friends, a car, a job. Have you ever noticed that it’s often the people with the fewest possessions who are the most grateful for their lot? Shouldn’t it be the other way round? Take time each day to give thanks to God for all that has been given to you.
Stewardship gift discernment Day will be on 9th of October at 11:45 after 10:30 Mass, followed by a light lunch. This is open to all the parish and is an opportunity to look at how you can discern your
special gifts and consider how you might use them in the parish community. Please keep this time free we will be finished by 1:15 pm at the latest including lunch.

Social Justice week the 11th to 17th of September
What is Social Justice Week?
Social Justice Week was established by the New Zealand Catholic
Bishops Conference in 1997 as an ongoing commitment in the Catholic calendar for the week beginning the second Sunday of September (11-17) This is a time to consider, reflect and take action on a particular current social justice issue in the light of Catholic social teaching. In June, the New Zealand Catholic Bishops
Conference released a statement on Migration for the Day of Prayer for Refugees and Migrants and the theme continues in our Social Justice Week focus on Migration in September 2016. The theme for this Year’s Social Justice week is: “We all have a Migration Story: Fostering a culture of encounter.” This will be celebrated on Sunday 11 September at the 10.30am Mass. We ask that you come in clothes that depict your country of origin and also bring a plate of food that is common to your ethnicity to share as light lunch after Mass. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the social justice week material after lunch at about 12noon.

At Christmas we talk about Peace on earth and good will to all people unfortunately though there is a lack of peace in our World, communities and sometimes our homes. The power of prayer can and will overcome violence and conflict.
At this time of celebrating the birth of Christ we can be a prayerful community who turn to God to ask that he lead all the people of the World, ourselves and our families to become peacemakers. Prayer and reflecting on peace can be a special gift this Christmas for ourselves, our families and all our sisters and brothers.
You are invited to join in a week of prayer for peace this advent, peace in the world, New Zealand, our local
community, our families, and peace within ourselves.
We are looking for people who would be willing to go out into the street and hand out invites to this week of prayer, or to put into letter boxes in their neighbourhood. If you can help please contact Teresa Homan 977 6963

In a parish as large as ours people ‘come and go’ all the time. There are also many significant people in any parish, and one is loath to signal out any of them. However, as John and Helen Pepperell leave us after 18 years in the parish, I think a reference to them needs to be made. I first met John and Helen at my 1st Saturday night Mass 12 years ago. ‘Hello Father, my name is John Pepperell and this is my wife Helen.”
John and Helen have both suffered from mental health issues over the years, but have never let this be a barrier to a passionate commitment to Christ, the Church and the needs of people suffering from mental health issues.
Over the years they have formed support groups for such people, which they have nurtured. I can think of 4 or 5 of these over the years’. As well, there have been scripture groups and faith-sharing groups.
Through John and Helen many Catholics have returned to the Church and many non-Catholics have become Catholics. Others have just known that they are loved. Many ventures have been tried over the years. One I remember in particular was a Christian bookshop at their home. There have also been holy pictures and prayers left in the foyer for people to take. Both have a great devotion to Mary.
Many people who have literally had ‘nowhere to stay’, have finished up at John and Helen’s until something came up. For me personally, John and Helen have been a constant reminder that as Church, we have to be out-going and go out to the margins. These are the very qualities that Pope Francis is challenging us to have.
Yesterday many gathered to farewell John and Helen in our Church foyer, the same foyer that John and Helen have ministered to so many over the years.
As they move to Palmerston North to be closer to their family, we wish them God’s blessings, safe travels, and new experiences as they continue to serve God in their own unique way.

Marriage Tribunal fees to end:
The New Zealand Catholic Bishops have decided the marriage tribunal will no longer charge fees for the marriage annulment process. The annulment process is undertaken following a civil divorce. Those who would like to know more about engaging in this process should contact their local Diocesan office of the Tribunal. Details are also available on www.catholic.org.nz
Eulogies at Catholic Funerals
This is a question sometimes asked. The following may be helpful.
The general rule is clear: Eulogies at Catholic funerals are discouraged. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says simply in No. 382: "At funeral Masses there should usually be a short homily, but to the exclusion of a funeral eulogy of any kind."
The Order of Christian Funerals (published 1989), however, gives an option that allows a balance
between what is proper and what is pastoral. Section No. 141 of that document restates the prohibition of eulogies: "A brief homily based on the readings should always be given at the funeral liturgy, but never any kind of eulogy."
But further on, the same document (No. 170) allows that: "A member or friend of the family may speak in remembrance of the deceased before the final commendation begins."
The ritual's guidelines envision that such family remarks be brief.
The reason for limitations on eulogies has to do with the nature and purpose of a Funeral Mass. The
liturgy should be focused on the promise of eternal life and the eventual hope of reunion. It is not meant to be a canonization of the deceased.
Instead, it is a tribute to the merciful love of Christ and to the victory over death won by Jesus, together with the prayerful plea that the merits of that victory be extended now to the person being prayed for.
The Vigil the night before the funeral is however a suitable time for eulogies and remembrances. There is often a time set aside on this occasions for this.
The Priest needs to know what is planned. He will do his best to explain the Church’s teaching and the reasons behind it.

Ministers of the Eucharist
Here are a list of Instructions that have come from Cardinal Dew and the Bishops
of New Zealand.
1. prior to entering the sanctuary rub an alcoholic cleanser on hands- preferable prior
to Mass or following the Sign of Peace, so that dispensers and hand cleansing do not
become a "ritual' carried out in the sanctuary.
2. unfold the purificator so that you may use it all
3. carefully and firmly wipe inside and outside the rim of the Chalice
4. turn the chalice slightly after each communicant
5. refrain from allowing purificators to touch anyone's lips.
6. No INTINCTION. (politely say to the person this is not allowed for health reasons)
7. Chalices to be washed in Hot Water and detergent after Mass
If you have any level of unwellness, try to find a replacement minister.
Implementing good hygiene is an act of love and hospitality to our brothers and sisters
If a serious outbreak of illness occurs, the Bishops of Aotearoa New Zealand will introduce
necessary liturgical adaptations for such an occasion.

Suzanne Aubert for Sainthood

Over the next few months we will be hearing a lot about the Cause of Mother Mary Aubert for Sainthood. Here is a brief history of the life of Suzanne Aubert. Suzanne Aubert, also known as Mother Aubert, was born and raised in France. She was from a middle class family, but developed a great love for the poor by taking food to them. Her grandmother taught her that the face of Christ can be seen in the faces of the poor, and that it was a privilege to serve them.
At the age of 19 Suzanne Aubert heard Bishop Pompallier speak in Lyon, and responded to his request for missionaries to go to New Zealand. When she left to board the whaling ship, her family thought she had gone to the funeral of a family friend, the Cure’dArs. Her father had not allowed her to become a religious in her late teens, and by leaving home she was breaking the promise she had made to her father to stay at home until she was 25. Pompallier taught Aubert and the other missionaries Maori on the way to New Zealand. Eventually she became fluent and wrote a Maori dictionary and prayer book.
In France Aubert had learnt chemistry and botany from a relative. When she arrived in New Zealand she used this knowledge to make remedies for healing. She eventually won the respect of the Maori people, who shared their own knowledge with her. Under the guidance of the Sisters of Mercy, Aubert and the other French missionaries opened a school for Maori girls in Auckland. When Pompallier left Auckland, he also left behind financial difficulties and as a result the school was closed down. Although she had learnt English after learning Maori, Aubert did not want to work in an English school as she had come to New Zealand to work with Maori. So she moved to Hawkes Bay where she worked as a district nurse and catechist. Later, she took over a school in Hiruharama or Jerusalem on the Whanganui River from the Sisters of St Joseph. This was how the Sisters of Compassion order began. As well as looking after the school, the women formed an orphanage and cared for babies who had been born out of wedlock and sent to them (often via paddle steamer) by their single mothers. As many of the babies were unwell, Aubert realized she had to be closer to good medical care, and in 1899 moved to Wellington with the other women. They saw in Wellington a need for a soup kitchen. They established one to help hungry workingmen hold down jobs. Following this, Sisters of Compassion communities were founded in Auckland and Wellington.
In 1913 Aubert left for Rome to obtain Papal approval for her order. The decree was granted in 1917 but because of the war she was unable to return to New Zealand until 1920. On her return she established a hospital and a system of professional nursing training for her sisters.
Suzanne Aubert died in 1926 at the age of 91. Many businesses and the Courts closed down for her funeral, indicating how respected and influential she was in Wellington society.
In the 1980s processes began for her canonisation as a saint. Jessie Munro wrote a biography of her life and the investigation of three recorded miracles began. Her writings were looked at in detail from both a historical and theological perspective. In 1997 the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference readily agreed to support the first part of the formal process, called the “Introduction of the Cause of
Suzanne Aubert".
More information on Mother Suzanne Aubert and the canonisation process can be found on the Sisters of Compassion website.
