A call to mission and ministry
Baptism is the first Sacrament of initiation followed by Confirmation and culminating with becoming full members of the church *The Body of Christ: when we receive our First Communion.
1275 Christian initiation is accomplished by three sacraments together: Baptism which is the beginning of new life; Confirmation which is its strengthening; and the Eucharist which nourishes the disciple with Christ's Body and Blood for his transformation in Christ.
Baptism call to mission and ministry
Ministry is linked to our baptism. Baptism is the foundational sacrament for ministry, and we are all called to accept the right to minister and the duty to contribute to the mission of Jesus in our church and world. Baptism is our vocation to become Priests, Prophets and Kings.
We are baptised into the person of Jesus
1213 Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), 4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word."5
1268 The baptised have become "living stones" to be "built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood." 74 By Baptism they share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission. They are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, that [they] may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called [them] out of darkness into his marvellous light."75 Baptism gives a share in the common priesthood of all believers.
People who request Baptism for their children are required to attend a one-hour preparation session where the sacrament will be explored in relation to the administration of the Sacrament. These preparation sessions are held on the first Sunday of the month in the Presbytery lounge at 2 pm. Parents, Godparents, grandparents are welcome to attend, as are the children who will be presented for baptism.
People are encouraged to consider celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism at a Sunday Mass to signify the one to be Baptised as becoming a member of the Church the people of God. Alternatively, Baptisms are held on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 2 pm or on the 4th Saturday of the month at 11 am.
To enquire about baptising your child(ren), please phone Barbara in the Parish office on 04 528 2028 or email stjosephsuh1@gmail.com.
Adults requesting baptism generally attend the Right of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) programme.

Baptisms At St Josephs Upper Hutt
Firstly, congratulations on making the decision to have you child(ren) baptised. It is a big decision and one that you will always remember. It will be a special moment in their life, a beginning of a special journey with Christ. We hold a Baptismal preparation afternoon once a month, which we ask all families to attend before arranging a date for the baptism. There is a great need for this as in the past the Priest would try to visit the family before the baptism, but this was not always possible. As a result, this important moment in the baptismal family’s life was not always as well prepared for as it could have been.
We now have an excellent team and a video resource to help those preparing for baptism. The Baptismal preparation is held on the 1st Sunday of each month from 2pm to 3:15pm in the Parish lounge. We are hoping that the parents come to one of these afternoons. If the child(ren) who are getting baptised are older it would be great for them to come along, as well as Godparents if they are able to. Please ring/email Barbara in the Parish office to book into one of the Baptismal preparation afternoons.
If both parents of the child(ren) are not Catholic, Fr Maleko asks to meet with you after you have attended the baptismal preparation before booking in the baptism. Please let Barbara know if this is the case.
Baptisms can take place during regular Mass; in fact, this is encouraged by Archbishop Paul Martin.
However, if you would like the baptism outside of the regular mass times, we have two set days and times during the month that baptisms take place. The first one is on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 2 pm and the 4th Saturday of the month at 11 am. There may be multiple families booked for the same date however the Baptism will still run the same.
If the baptism is not at a Sunday Mass, the service is followed as set out in the Rite of Baptism booklet. On the day, everyone will have a copy of this, but as parents and godparents it would be good to read it beforehand.
You will need to select godparents. The church asks that at least one of the godparents be a Catholic and all others be Christian. The parish supplies a white baptismal gown, called a stole for babies/younger children, a baptismal candle (although it is fine if someone in the family supplies one), and a baptismal certificate.
A koha for the baptism is appreciated which can be deposited into the parish bank account. If you have any questions, please email Barbara in the Parish office stjosephsuh1@gmail.com.
