The Catholic Women's League of Aotearoa New Zealand was founded in 1906 in England by Margaret Fletcher. Her aim was to make Catholic women conscious of the contribution, based on the teaching of the Catholic Church, that they could make to the social, intellectual and spiritual life of the community.
Our Patron Saint is St Margaret Clitherow, also known as "the Pearl of York". Married and a mother of three children Margaret was martyred during the reign of Elizabeth I and was canonised in 1970. Margaret was not raised a Catholic but converted after her marriage. Her husband remained a member of the established church.
CWL was first established in New Zealand in 1931 in Auckland; Wellington began in 1944. Father Herlihy, the first Chaplain, made it clear that League was meant to be an action group working for the welfare and spiritual development of women and to be a Catholic voice in the community.
Members within the Wellington Archdiocese have taken a prominent part in the Archdiocesan affairs and many have also been prominent in their communities

President of Upper Hutt BranchSusan Lloyd |
Susan Lloyd’s appointment as Archdiocesan President of CWL has been endorsed by the Archdiocesan Council. She will be commencing her term of office as President on the 4th May. Susan is well known to all, needing no introduction. As a very committed member of the Catholic Women’s League, in many roles, for a long time, Susan also has had the wonderful advantage of having worked with many role model Leaguers from past years, so brings a wealth of expertise to this new phase of the Archdiocesan Council. Last year the Upper Hutt Branch honoured Susan with Life membership. Thank you, Susan, for accepting this position. Susan is also President of the Upper Hutt Branch.

MILO MONDAYS We have had three very successful days at the St Joseph’s School serving over 300 pupils with a nice cup of warm milo during their morning tea breaks. We have been fortunate to have received a supply of plastic cups. A tremendous help as a lot of the children do not bring cups. Many thanks to CWL members Brenda Neville, Nellie Boynton, Ivy Ryan, Teresa Crosbie and their helpers. As we are now in Level 2 we are unable to supply these drinks until a return to Level 1.

CWL LOTTO BONUS RESULTS
NEW BRANCH MEMBERS A warm welcome to Nellie Boynton and Ivy Ryan.
BRANCH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING To be held on Tuesday, 10th November. It is important for the future of our Branch for you to think now about suitable people to step forward and provide us with the benefit of their expertise as Committee members. We can never have too many to give us cover when holidays or other commitments are at hand.
MISSION COMMUNITY The Ahopanilolo Technical Institute has been our Pacific Community that we support for several years but in the last few years communication has broken down. We have tried every avenue to no avail. The Branch Committee have decided to ask the CWLANZ National Mission Secretary to allocate us a new Mission Community in the Pacific with our first preference being another Tongan location.
TV KNITTING – SLIPPERS, FINGERLESS GLOVES & BEANNIES Thank you to those Members who have been knitting furiously. The finished articles to date have been much appreciated by St Michael’s School. There is a continuing need but just a bit bigger in size. Keep knitting!! We can still come up with wool if needed.
REGIONAL DAY Not too far away now. It is our Branch turn to host. This will be held on our normal 2nd Tuesday in October (13th). Instead of starting at 1.30pm this day will commence at 10am followed by a shared lunch.
THANK YOU To those Members who have helped with the refreshments at the funerals of John McDonald, Deirdre McEvoy and June Passmore. Please keep these people and their families in your prayers. Eternal Rest Grant to the O Lord.
To Irene Hennessey, a big thank you for knitting the new tea cosies which will display CWL prominently at various functions.
ALERT LEVEL TWO
When this is over, May we never again take for granted. A handshake with a stranger. Full shelves at the store. Conversations with neighbours. A crowded theatre Friday night out. A routine check up. Coffee with a friend. A taste of Communion. The stadium roaring. Each deep breath. A boring Tuesday. Life itself.
When this ends.
May we find That we have become
More like the people.
We wanted to be We were called to be
We hoped to be
And may we stay That way – better
For each other
Because of the worst.
PLEASE PRAY “Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble.
But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it. And not in the one who says it,
Our Prayers do make a difference.”

Knitting - St Michael's Primary School |
Memorial Mass at Mercy Chapel |
These knitted garments were presented to St Michael's Primary School, Taita on 23 June, 2020. 33 Hats, 18 pairs of TV slippers, 27 pairs of Fingerless Gloves, all were knitted by members of the Catholic Women's League, Upper Hutt.

There was a Memorial Mass at the Mercy Chapel, presided over by Father Kevin. After Mass there was a short monthly meeting of members (the first since lockdown) followed by afternoon tea.
The Memorial Mass recognised three members that died during the lockdown, Nolene Casey, Freda Sanders and Adrienne Lacy. Also we remembered two of our members husbands, Barry McNaughten and Eddie Carson. |
